Idõnként megkérdezi tõlem valaki, mondjuk az apám, akinek rendes munkája van és ért dolgokhoz, hogy mivel is foglalkozom a munkahelyemen. Hiszen a munkahelyem egy autós villanymédiacég, én pedig még autót vezetni sem tudok. Ilyenkor általában komolyan magam elé nézek, elkerekítem a szemem és megpróbálok valami józsefattilás ráncot produkálni a homlokom közepére, majd azt mondom: öööööö. Hát, izé, sok feladatom van. üöö, például klassz dolgokat találok ki. Ja meg, ööö, ha kitalál valaki más egy klassz dolgot akkor pátyolgatom és nem hagyom hogy az enyészeté legyen. Mármint a klassz dolog.
De most mondás helyett mutatni is tudom. Egy munkanap délutánján például balkezes vallásos zsidót imitálva Lexus-selyemszalagot tekertem a karomra tfilinként, majd megkértem Bazsó “Nínó Karotta” Gábort, hogy fotózzon le. ? pedig fogja a fejét, hogy a hülye Orosz megint csinál valami belterjes izét amit az olvasók nagy része nem fog érteni, aki meg érti az jó eséllyel megbántódik. De aztán jön és fényképez. Hát ezért szeretem én a munkahelyemet, a totalcart. A vidámság és a nevetés házát.

I think it is true to say that while most Hungarian Jews consider the original Kertész book to be a true gem most did not like the Koltai film at all. I tend to agree. Compared to the novel, the movie is so painfully banal; images just seem harmless and so innocuous and do not manage to express anything really at the end. The musical score (Ennio Morricone?) is even worse, it’s just horrible.
Compared with the novel, the movie is not moving - it doesn’t even generate feelings of solidarity or empathy.
Ed Gonzalez put it best perhaps (Slant Magazine) -
“Interest becomes dreariness in this 140 minute fatality of tedious storytelling about the fate of a young Hungarian boy from Budapest, a victim of the Nazi Holocaust. At that length it is neither shocking nor gripping.”

add-ins to shadai’s opinion - just some of my impressions:
TM i meant, in the hungarian jewish community is like in the joke: how many synagogue must be at an unsettled island for a jewish maroon? least two, because one must be to go there, and another not to go there… so, as i see it (=imho) you mostly cannot find any -jewish related- idea, plan or initiative (or it’s pretty difficult, maybe really hopeless) in our community, wherein we are harmonizing. this is a hungarian idiosyncras(z)y isn’t it? but i don’t know what are the reasons of (and behind) this habit, maybe the other jp-guys have some idea…
so, i read the book ages ago (before the nobel prize), and it was a really for-the-ages experience to me. the haggard, simplistic clear-out and reduced language of imre kertész - i think (and i don’t know, how perceptible this effort in the english version is) this is -imo- what in the movie you can’t find. the film is pathetic and maybe sentimentally (and morricone proves this feeling). some of the actors are really good - mainly among walk-ons - but it’s not enough for me.
finally: it was a phenomenon in hungary, which has rooted on the socializm’s culture-era: films, they meant importance to the red (political) system’s goals, was a must to go (compulsory program) and see with our classmates. they were mostly but not exclusively russian films (e.g. chapaev or the corporal and others). this phenomenon has revealed under the previous government too: the hídember was an official subsidised film and the students (mainly in secondary school-age) must have gone to see that. this “non-optional referenced” solution in behalf of the reach of the film characterizes the fateless too.
besides these, i don’t think, that a good cameraman is definitely good as a director…
first and last: i read the book, i saw the film, and my vote went to reading the book - what’s more again and again, but see the movie - it was absolutely enough once in my life, thx. (of course it is just my personal standard)
